Pruning Rosetrees

Rosebushes with big flowers, with grouped flowers, or rose stems

March is the best month to prune rosebushes.  Leave 5 to 7 branches well spread out around the trunk.  Favour young shoots and ventilate the centre of the rosebush by cutting the oldest branches.

Cut these branches at an angle at about 15cms. from the ground (the bevel should be oriented so that water doesn’t seep from the bud) just above an eye which is oriented towards the outside of the trunk (5 mm. above it).  Leave between 3 or 5 eyes but if it is badly orientated, cut lower down.  In general, three eyes are cut for young rosebushes or embankment roses (Polyantas and Floribundas) and five are cut for varieties with big flowers (tea hybrids).

Get rid of weak or dead branches and cut the others at 3 or 5 eyes. This will rejuvenate your plant. The cut should be clean, at an angle and about 1cm. from the bud. The bud should be oriented away from the trunk.

Cut rosebushes with big flowers and sturdy roesbushes at 4 or 5 eyes.

When autumn comes, cut your branches at about 40 centimetres from the ground.  This is just for aesthetic reasoins, to avoid seeing branches without leaves throughtout the winter.

Climbing and bushy rosetrees.

Again in March, cut the branches to about a quarter of their length, above an eye growing outwards.  Get rid of weak and dead branches, keeping only the sturdy ones.  You can also get rid of the older branches which have been replaced by younger ones.

Low-growing rosetrees

Cut these according to the amount of space you want to leave them.

Miniature rosetrees.

Cut them back to a fifth and shape them nicely.  Get rid of the small stems.
